Spring Lake woman organizing community prayer walk

With all of the bad things going on in the world lately, Carol Van Dop of Spring Lake said she wants to encourage something good. "We have a lot of troubled families,' she said. "There's a lot of things going on, like the economy. There's people without jobs, illnesses, divorces and kids who are hurting.'

So, when her pastor, Drew Sweetman of Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church, asked Van Dop for some ideas of things they could do during Lent, she decided to have members of the congregation walk around the neighborhoods saying a prayer.

Sweetman has written a prayer that people can use if they choose.

The event will happen at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14.

There’s no sign up or organizational meetings.

Van Dop said the idea is that anyone who wants to participate can just get together with their church groups or friends and walk around their neighborhoods.

A prayer room has also been set up at Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church, located where Lake Street curves into Leonard Road. Van Dop said there will be soothing music and a small water fountain to help create a calming effect for people who chose to use the room.

Below is the prayer written by Sweetman for the walk:
“Almighty God, in the powerful name of Jesus, we lift up this (household, business, school) to you. Pour out your blessing on each (member, employee, student, teacher, etc.). Protect each one from the flaming arrows of the devil. Where there is disease, bring healing; where there is conflict, bring peace; where there are financial troubles, provide generously. In your mercy, hear our prayer. In your power and might, answer us, we pray, through Jesus. Amen.”
