Village Baker planned for Savidge Street

Optimism is rising for a potential new bakery in a vacant village showroom. The husband-and-wife team Sarah Rathbun and Oran Rankin say they hope to open the Village Baker at 617 E. Savidge St. early this summer in the former Duer Construction showroom, east of the Rite Aid pharmacy. If the village's Planning Commission signs off on the plan at its April 26 meeting, the business would become the first bakery in the village since the long-standing Braak's Bakery burned down in 1996.

Rankin and Rathbun said they looked at the former Braak Bakery site, which was most recently the Phoenix Deli Cafe, but the Spring Lake couple said it was out of their price range.

Village Community Services Director Kathy Staton said the bakery meets zoning requirements and the Planning Commission vote is “more of a formality.”
