Holland officials discuss medical marijuana rules

The city of Holland is considering restrictions on medical marijuana that would allow patients to grow it in their own homes, and caregivers to grow and distribute it as part of a home-based business. The Holland Planning Commission discussed the ordinance at its meeting Tuesday night. The ordinance is similar to one in Grand Rapids. Medical marijuana caregivers would have to follow restrictions on where they grow their product and allow for city inspections.

The panel is also considering an extension of a moratorium on the establishment of a medical marijuana dispensary.

“Do we want to have the option at least of large-scale commercial enterprises?” asked Holland Mayor Kurt Dykstra. “Or do we want to make this more along the lines of people taking care of their medicinal needs, and helping their friends and their medicinal needs?”

Holland City Council will make the final decision on the medical marijuana ordinance and dispensary moratorium at future meetings.
