Severe thunderstorms swept through West Michigan Wednesday night, dropping hail and heavy rain from Mason County to Holland and east to Grand Rapids.
Residents of a Grandville neighborhood said lightning hit a tree, which then fell onto a gas line at 40th Street and Piute Drive S.W. The ruptured gas line started a fire. Christina Abraham said a gas line explosion blew a 4-foot section of the tree into the wall of a home across the street.
There were reports of homes hit by lightning in Wyoming and in Ottawa County, though no smoke or flames were found by firefighters.
