Severe weather blows through West Michigan

Severe thunderstorms swept through West Michigan Wednesday night, dropping hail and heavy rain from Mason County to Holland and east to Grand Rapids. Residents of a Grandville neighborhood said lightning hit a tree, which then fell onto a gas line at 40th Street and Piute Drive S.W. The ruptured gas line started a fire. Christina Abraham said a gas line explosion blew a 4-foot section of the tree into the wall of a home across the street. There were reports of homes hit by lightning in Wyoming and in Ottawa County, though no smoke or flames were found by firefighters.
