Downtown construction project in home stretch

"The paving contractors are ready to start as soon as the need for heavy construction traffic on Washington is minimized,' Grand Haven Special Project Manager Julie Beaton said Friday. "The top course of asphalt is still scheduled for the week of May 23 to 27, but some work may begin earlier.'

Beaton said the first indication that paving is near will be when crews in the street remove the temporary asphalt wedges that have been place at the crosswalks.

Those must be removed prior to paving.

While only a week remains until asphalt companies can begin paving, crews are making progress in completing the streetscape portion of the work.

“We have now completed the (sidewalk) removals in all the zones — and are crossing our fingers every day that it is dry enough to pour concrete, wash it, cut it and apply the finish,” Beaton said.
