CG crew to host boating safety events in Grand Haven

The crew of U.S. Coast Guard Station Grand Haven will participate in two boating safety events in Grand Haven during National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27. On Saturday, from 8 a.m. to noon, crew members and Coast Guard auxiliarists will be conducting free vessel safety checks in the parking lot directly across the street from the smallboat station, 601 S. Harbor Ave. Boaters who want to have any safety equipment inspected may bring it with them and personnel will provide instruction on how to use equipment properly.

The second event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Tri-Cities Family YMCA. Station Grand Haven crew members will be displaying the station’s 25-foot response boat-small, and will be joined by members of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department and Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Children will be allowed to see the inside of the response boat.

The goal of National Safe Boating Week is to heighten awareness among recreational boaters of the importance of boating responsibly, including wearing a life jacket at all times.
