Agencies talk about boating safely at YMCA event

Children in the day care programs and adults heading to and from their workouts had an opportunity to learn about safe boating during an event held Tuesday outside the Tri-Cities Family YMCA. "We're encouraging life jackets - especially for the kids - on the boat or at the beach,' said Petty Officer 1st Class Sean Long, who was representing U.S. Coast Guard Station Grand Haven at the event.

The man, who drives boats for the Coast Guard, said he was pushing the “Wear It!” campaign, which is sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council in conjunction with National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27.

The Coast Guard had its 25-foot response boat parked in front of the fitness center. There was also a display of gear Coast Guardsmen wear out on the water.

Also participating in the event were the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department Marine Patrol and Grand Haven Department of Public Safety.
