Spring Lake Village approves new budget

Village Council on Monday unanimously approved a budget that maintains current tax rates and saves $20,000 in salary for a full-time planning and zoning position. Council will use a part-time planner - possibly sharing services with Spring Lake Township and the city of Grand Haven - for a six-month trial period to replace Community Services Director Kathy Staton, who retired last month.

A four-member committee will explore sharing Spring Lake Township Planner Lukas Hill and Grand Haven City planner Kristin Keery. The six month trial would cost the Village $15,000 for about 15 hours per week. Hill would fill the part-time slot July through September followed by Keery from October through December.

Committee members will also discuss hiring an outside planner on a part-time trial basis.
