Former Grand Haven city employee moves up the ranks

A Grand Haven native who started her career with the city is moving up the ranks, taking on a role as city manager of Ferndale, a suburb of Detroit. "I am really excited,' said Ypsilanti Assistant City Manager April McGrath. McGrath, who spent nine years working for the city of Grand Haven, was selected as Ferndale's new city manager on June 17. "My original intent wasn't to go into government, but I started in Grand Haven right out of college,' she added.

McGrath began her career with Grand Haven working for the police department for six years. During this time, she worked with a federal grant called the Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Program. This was focused on family programs, community policing and parenting programs

After this, she obtained a master’s degree in human resources, and eventually worked as the human resources director and assistant to the city manager until August 2005.

“That started my whole career in government,” McGrath said.
