McGrath began her career with Grand Haven working for the police department for six years. During this time, she worked with a federal grant called the Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Program. This was focused on family programs, community policing and parenting programs
After this, she obtained a master’s degree in human resources, and eventually worked as the human resources director and assistant to the city manager until August 2005.
“That started my whole career in government,” McGrath said.
