GH Rotary Club offers new event for fundraising

The Rotary Club of Grand Haven is switching gears this year, and instead of a high stakes raffle, will present a public wine and beer tasting event on the waterfront. The "D'Vine Event' will take place on Thursday, June 30, from 6-9 p.m. at 1 S. Harbor next to Waterfront Stadium.

Rotary Club President Kennard Creason explained that the momentum had drained from the raffle, and this year’s board decided to try something different. “The trend over the past several years is heading south, so we hope a fresh perspective will liven things up a bit,” Creason said.

This year’s beneficiary is the Grand Haven Schools Foundation, and 100 percent of the profits will go toward early childhood education opportunities in Grand Haven.

Studies show that children who receive early intervention and learning opportunities before kindergarten are far more likely to succeed in school and in life, so the foundation is committed to making sure every child has access to a program that fosters a love of learning and early success, Creason said.

“For many years we’ve selected a cause and held a raffle with tickets selling for $100 each,” said President Creason. “This new approach takes the focus off winning a big prize and places the emphasis on the children of Grand Haven.”

Tickets for the D’Vine Event are $25 each, and additional funds will be raised through silent auctions and wine sales.

Past years’ causes include the soon-to-be constructed waterfront splash pad, the Mulligan’s Hollow Ski Bowl Lodge and Grand Haven’s Farmers Market.  Ladd’s & Co. will be providing a selection of fine wines and a sampling of craft beers. Appetizers are being provided by The Kirby House, Dee Lite, Portobello, Rose Bud restaurants and Consider it Done catering. Four hundred tickets are available. Advance purchase is encouraged and can be made by contacting any Rotary member, by stopping by Consider It Done located at 320 Columbus Ave. or at the gate pending ticket availability.

“The D’Vine Event, through the foundation, will provide preschool scholarships for at-risk 3 and 4 year olds; what better way to kick off a holiday weekend on Grand Haven’s waterfront,” Creason said.
