GH residents see U2 in concert at Spartan Stadium

Among the thousands who saw the Irish rock band U2 perform at Spartan Stadium on Sunday were several Grand Haven-area residents, including Jeanne Welling and Kevin Berko. Welling, the owner of Jeanne's Cafe, said she drove to Michigan State University's campus with a friend to see the concert. She bought the tickets "on a whim' on Thursday for what would be her first time seeing the band in person. "It was awesome, it was absolutely incredible,' Welling said. "The energy level was unbelievable.'

The stage itself was something to behold, Welling said.

“It takes three weeks apparently to build the stage,” she said.

Kevin Berko of Grand Haven said the stage “looked like a spaceship from outer space.” It included a huge video screen and lots of lights.

Berko, who went to the concert with friends and family, said he liked how U2 engaged the audience with their music as well as the visual aspect of the show. Like Welling, it was the first time he had seen the band perform in concert.
