Cars for Keeps opens 2nd location across the bridge

The owner of a Grand Haven car repair business has opened a second facility on the other side of the Grand River. Rob Hopp, who has operated Cars for Keeps at 1050 Fulton Ave. in Grand Haven since 2004, said the new location at 14747 Cleveland St. in Spring Lake Township is drawing first-time customers.

“The bridge has always been a psychological barrier,” said Hopp, who started the business as Automotive Advantage in Ferrysburg in 1990. “When we moved from Ferrysburg to Grand Haven, it was eye-opening to see how many people didn’t want to go that extra mile and deal with the drawbridge.”

Hopp said he had been in discussions with Phil and Norma Cook, owners of the former Dr. Phil’s Auto Clinic, for a number of years about taking over their shop when they retired.

“It’s been a long-term goal of ours to have a shop out here,” Hopp said.
