Spring Lake fire service contract OK’d

The Spring Lake Township Board on Monday approved a revised fire service contract with the Village of Spring Lake. The agreement is an updated version of the original 1976 contract between the township and the village. The new pact does not raise the $12,000 rate that the village has paid since the original agreement. A new provision of the contract states that, if the township passes a fire millage in the future, the village will no longer owe the annual fee.

Representatives from both municipalities have been meeting for more than six months to discuss the contract.

Township Manager Gordon Gallagher said it costs about $600,000 annually to operate the department — the equivalent of the revenue generated by about a 1-mill property tax.
