Tax exemption will allow local manufacturer to expand, add up to 80 new jobs

Grand Haven City Council unanimously approved an Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption Certificate for Grand Haven Custom Molding on Monday, a move that officials say will help the local business grow in the coming months. "This abatement is very important to us,' company owner Karl Chapel said Monday night. "The economy is tough and we need as many additional jobs in the community as we can get.' Per the deal, the IFT Exemption is for $4 million over a 12-year period.

According to Chapel, there has been significant growth at the company since its start 13 months ago. Grand Haven Custom Molding LLC is located at the old Michigan Plastics/JSJ facility at 1500 S. Beechtree St.

Chapel said the company had about $7 million in sales in its first year and is expected to book about $32 million in business next year.

With the tax abatement, company officials now plan to expand the existing building, repair a 39-year-old roof, and improve manufacturing capability by adding new injection molding machines and auxiliary equipment.

Chapel said they also plan to add between 60 and 80 full-time jobs in the coming months.
