Irish band to play at benefit for Ghana performers

You can design a unique gourmet hot dog while listening to live traditional Irish jigs on the patio at Fat Chix Cantina, 314 S. Beechtree St. in Grand Haven from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday. The event will help support a community ArtPrize project organized by the coffee shop's staff. The cost is a donation at your discretion. The community ArtPrize project will feature a 24-man dancing and drumming group from Ghana. Organizer Mary Mitchell said that about $36,000 of the $45,000 cost to bring them here has been raised.

Mitchell said she hopes to get the Konye group to West Michigan by Sept. 21, despite numerous roadblocks thrown up by the need for passports, visas and music union requirements in both Ghana and the U.S.

Tiki O’Riley, a group of traditional Irish session musicians from all over West Michigan, will perform at Thursday’s event. Singers, dancers and acoustic musicians are welcome to join in to the open session-style performance.

A huge THANK YOU to all 14 musicians in Tiki O'Riley who turned out for this event and gave their time to entertain all the hot dog "designers." The crowd was large and enthusiastic, and Fat Chix Cantina had their most successful fundraiser ever! A whopping $900 was raised toward the cost of bringing a drumming/dancing troupe "Korye" from Ghana for ArtPrize. Hoping to have the 23 guys all here by September 21st. They will be performing all over west Michigan for the next few months.
