U.S. ag secretary to visit West Michigan today

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack plans to continue his visit to Michigan with a trip to the western part of the state. Vilsack is scheduled to meet with farmers, agribusiness leaders and others at a forum in Sparta today. Biofuels, food processing and specialty crops are expected to be among the discussion topics at the agriculture forum. Vilsack also is expected to tour the Michigan Biotechnology Institute in Lansing.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan is expected to join Vilsack during the appearances. Stabenow is chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
