Nearly 1,000 turn out for Gentex Corp. job fair

By noon Thursday, nearly 1,000 applications had been processed at a job fair for Zeeland-based Gentex Corp. The event in Holland was scheduled to open at 10 a.m. Workers said because the line was getting so big, they had to open two hours earlier to allow everyone time. The company said last week that it plans to hire more than 1,000 additional employees, following the announcement of a tax credit that will allow the manufacturer to expand.

Administrators are looking to fill 200-250 technical and mechanical positions. Those jobs pay about $12 an hour, along with benefits and a chance for quarterly bonuses.

Gentex also needs to fill about 100 engineering jobs with a salary ranging from $30,000 to $60,000, based on experience. Those jobs also come with a benefits package and quarterly bonuses.

Since Jan. 1, Gentex has hired more than 600 full-time positions. They’re hoping to expand by 300-400 from Thursday’s fair and online applications over the next few months.
