Men’s barbershop society names woman as director

The Muskegon Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society has selected a young woman as its new director. S. Annette Jurcevic will be the first female director of the 70-year-old, all-male singing organization.

Jurcevic has an extensive background in a cappella vocal music. She also plays the piano, flute and trombone. Jurcevic has advance degrees in vocal music and choral conducting, and is a graduate of the Barbershop Harmony Society’s Harmony University Director’s College. She most recently was involved with the Austin, Texas, barbershop chapter as quartet and chorus coach.  

The Ludington native has been involved in community choruses and orchestras, as well as community theater, since childhood.

Jurcevic will begin her Muskegon chapter tenure in September. She invites men of all ages who love to sing to join her and the chorus at a rehearsal every Thursday, beginning at 7 p.m., at Dr. Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1860 E. Hile Road in Muskegon.
