C.R.O.P. Walk for Hunger: SL Presbyterian Church to host this year’s event

The Rev. Lary Jackson's job requires a lot of walking. He doesn't mind, he says, because it's for a good cause. Jackson works for Church World Service - a cooperative ministry of 36 Christian denominations that organizes C.R.O.P. hunger walks throughout northern Indiana and West Michigan. Jackson, who still makes his home in Spring Lake, will be participating in 10 different walks to help raise awareness about the hunger and poverty that is rampant throughout the world.

He will be among more than 400 participants who are expected to walk 4.5 miles in the annual Tri-Cities C.R.O.P. (Community Response to Overcoming Poverty) Hunger Walk on Sunday, Oct. 2.

This year’s event is being hosted by Spring Lake Presbyterian Church. It will begin and end at the church, 760 E. Savidge St. Registration begins at 1 p.m. and the walk will start at 2 p.m.

“Thanks to the leadership in the Tri-Cities, all the churches have done a marvelous job of promoting the walk,” Jackson said.

This year, Jackson and other local organizers are hoping to raise $40,000. The money is distributed locally, nationally and internationally, he said.

Jackson said 25 percent of the money raised will go to food pantries operated by Love INC, The People Center in Spring Lake and The Salvation Army. The remaining money will go to U.S. states devastated by hurricanes, floods and tornadoes; and to famine-stricken countries.

Anyone interested in participating can register online at www.cropwalkonline.org/grandhavenmi. For additional information or to volunteer, call Jeanette at Love INC at 846-2701 or e-mail her at jeanette@loveinctricities.org.
