Dogs washed to help family

Despite all the tail wagging, the proceeds from a benefit wash in Spring Lake on Saturday afternoon didn't go to the dogs. The money raised at the event will help cover medical expenses for an uninsured Spring Lake family. Zachery Bugielski, 18, suffered a closed-head injury when he fell from his skateboard on Aug. 23. Zachery's memory was affected by bleeding on the brain, but his recovering is going well - according to his mother, Amy Van Strate.

But the medical bills have topped $17,000 — with more to come, she said — and the family has no health insurance.

The Van Strate family is the recipient of the funds from this year’s charity dog wash, hosted by Harborfront Hospital for Animals.

Organizers said 50 dogs were washed — raising $800 in donations, plus $300 more in baked goods, amounting to a $1,100 gift to the family.
