Ferrysburg motorized equipment millage request a half-mill less than previous years

City officials are not letting three strikes count them out as the renewal request for a motorized equipment millage will once again be on the November ballot in Ferrysburg. The difference this time, City Clerk Debbie Wierenga said, is the request will be for half a mill less. The city is asking its residents to approve the collection of a 0.5-mill tax for 10 years to fund motorized equipment. This would collect approximately $78,000 for the city during the first year, Wierenga said.

The millage would cost the owner of a $150,000 home about $37.50 a year, she said.

The 10-year, 1-mill tax that has been funding purchases of police cars, snow plows and fire trucks expired in 2008. So city officials put a request on that year’s ballot to renew the millage, but it failed by a 2-1 margin.

Requests in 2009 and 2010 for 1 mill failed by the same margin, Wierenga noted.

That doesn’t mean the fund is out of money, the city clerk said. There is approximately $522,000 in the motorized equipment account — enough to last the city through the year 2015 at the current vehicle replacement rate.

“If the millage does not pass, the council will take that into consideration when there are vehicle purchases on the agenda,” Wierenga said.
That’s when City Council will decide if they want to pay for vehicles from the general fund, “which would mean cutback of services to our residents,” she said.
