Church of the Dunes celebrates 50 years on Sheldon Road

Shari Hock remembers well when the doors of the new United Methodist Church of the Dunes building were first opened. She and her husband, James, were married on Feb. 18, 1961, at the church's new location at 717 Sheldon Road. "They were installing the organ that day,' Shari recalled. "And the man working on it, he lay down on the floor in the choir loft until we were married. Then he finished his job. Mom always chuckled about that.'

The Hocks will be among the United Methodist Church of the Dunes parishioners who will be celebrating the church’s 50th anniversary of its Sheldon Road location this month.

Church members have scheduled a month-long celebration, which includes an open invitation to the public for its worship services.

“Throughout October, we are very pleased to honor and recognize the many pastors, congregational members and volunteers who have served our church over the past 50 years,” said the Rev. Dan Duncan, the Grand Haven church’s senior pastor.

The celebration kicks off Sunday with its “Ministry of Invitation” during two services at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Church members are welcoming anyone to attend their services.
