Power Squadron offering boaters safety classes

The Muskegon Sail and Power Squadron is going to be making classes available for people to learn about boating safety. The first of six weekly classes begin on Thursday at the Great Lakes Naval & Memorial Museum, 1346 Bluff St. at 7 p.m., with registration beginning at 6:30 p.m. Topics covered at the course include required safety equipment, operator responsibility, state and federal regulations, navigation aids, anchoring aids, knot tying, and GPS and nautical charts.

The cost of the six week course is $35 and includes a 243-page book and two reference CDs. People can share material for only $10.

Upon completion of the course, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will issue a boating safety certificate. People can also monitor the course at no charge, but no certificates will be awarded.
