Bras Across the Grand to seek world record Oct. 22

Bring your best-decorated brassiere to the Gillette Pedestrian Bridge near Ah-Nab-Awen Park in Grand Rapids on Saturday, Oct. 22, to show support for all breast cancer survivors and to raise awareness of the disease.

Bras Across the Grand is an American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Awareness Month event celebrating cancer survivors; and raising awareness among men and women to follow early detection guidelines for screening, and to make healthy behavioral changes to lower their risk of breast cancer.

For a $5 donation, residents can decorate a bra to be displayed in the “chain of hope” along the Grand River’s Gillette Pedestrian Bridge, serving as a visual reminder of those who are fighting the disease and those who have lost their battle. By hanging a bra, attendees are also participating in a Guinness World Record attempt for the world’s longest string of bras.

“Anyone can bring a bra to the event to decorate and hang in honor of a loved one,” said Cindy Mackey, director of the American Cancer Society Northwest Michigan office. “There will be a bra-decorating contest, pancake breakfast and other family-friendly activities.”

Bras Across the Grand takes place from 9 a.m. to noon, with a survivor celebration at 11 a.m.
