Oil sheen spotted on Grand River

Officials are trying to determine the source of an oil sheen on the Grand River that was seen floating through downtown Jackson.

The Jackson Citizen Patriot reported the sheen was spotted Wednesday afternoon and it was suspected of coming from the city’s southeast side. The city’s Public Works Department and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality said they were investigating.

Jon Dowling, director of public works, estimated that less than a gallon of oil ended up in the river, but it spread out quickly.

Booms were set up to capture the oil.
