Friends pick up Oprah car gifts

Her talk show has departed the airwaves, but Oprah Winfrey's generosity took a front seat at an area car dealership Thursday afternoon. Childhood friends Twanda Blake and Patricia Dozier both received 2012 Volkswagen Beetles at My Auto Import Center, 1860 E. Sternberg Road, courtesy of the popular talk show host. Blake of Muskegon and Dozier of Holland have known each other since junior high school in Muskegon Heights. Each year for the last decade, they've attended a taping of the "Oprah Winfrey Show' in Chicago.

The last one — on Nov. 17, 2010 — was the best one for them. Winfrey gave a new car to all those in attendance at the taping show, her final “my favorite things” taping.

Thursday was pick-up day nationwide, and Dozier and Blake squealed like schoolgirls when they saw their shiny silver sports cars — much like they did when Oprah announced the gift last November.

“We were just screaming,” Dozier recalled. “We couldn’t believe it. I wasn’t going to believe it until we were actually here.”

Up until Thursday, Blake drove a 1999 Nissan Sentra. Dozier plodded along in a decade-old Hyundai.

I was at an oprah winfrey show in chicago in or around 1993. I was there with a friend from a private christian school in Illinois. After I was told to wear bright colors, I went to the show. My purse was searched, and we proceeded. The show was all about LOVE! Here comes Yanni and Linda Evans....yahooooo! blah blah blah, the show ends. Back then, no one left with a car or perfume or groceries...all I wanted was a handshake...like everyone else. I walked up to ms. winfrey and she put out her hand and turned and looked at a staff member and didn't make eye contact with me?...like she had done with everyone before me. I still talk about this. I really don't care, but either did oprah. Great she can give cars and whatever away, but back then we didn't get any toys... but what I TOOK away that day was she couldn't care less about me. And Ditto.
