Home sought for cat that survived mobile home fire

A howling cat woke up the owner of a mobile home - enough so that he was able to escape the burning structure. Later, the cat was nowhere to be found and was feared dead, said Deborah Pless, sister of homeowner Mark Mitchell.

But Pless and her sister, Delores Green, both of Spring Lake, kept going out to the rural property on 120th Avenue, searching in vain for the 4-year-old cat named Blue.

“We were coming out here looking for him,” Pless said. “We had been leaving food, but we didn’t see any trace of him.”

Two weeks after the Aug. 28 fire destroyed Mitchell’s home, Pless saw a thin, scraggly cat come out of the woods. “We couldn’t believe it,” she said.

Neither woman could take in the animal and their brother is living with his daughters in Grand Rapids, they said. So Pless propped open the door of an old camper on the property and started going out daily to feed the cat.

“He looks pretty good now,” Green said.

That has worked for awhile, but now the women are concerned that Blue won’t make it through the winter.

The most recent transition for the cat was his trip from the property to Clark Animal Hospital in Norton Shores. Green said Clark staff agreed to take in the cat and give it medical attention, and then offer it up for adoption.

Veterinary technician Tiffany Marcus said the cat has already tested negative for feline leukemia and feline immune deficiency virus. He still has to be vaccinated, and treated for internal and external parasites, she said.

Anyone interested in adopting the neutered, short-hair cat should call Clark Animal Hospital at 231-798-1957 to set up an appointment to meet him. An application will also have to be completed.
