Gabe Vink and Ellie Vink were disappointed that they missed an opportunity to ride in a fire truck during the recent Grand Haven Department of Public Safety Fire Prevention Open House.

But that disappointment soon turned into joy and an exchange of high five’s when they learned that they were winners of the GHDPS fire safety drawing contest.

As a reward for winning the “How Would You Protect Your Love Ones?” contest, Gabe, 8, and Ellie, 7 — both Griffin Elementary School students — earned rides aboard a GHDPS fire truck on Tuesday. They rode around the neighborhood and to school on a fire truck with Officer Terry Turkelson.

Gabe and Ellie were able to bring their parents; their brother, Grant, 10; and their grandmother (who had never rode in a fire truck before) on the ride.
