The two candidates — Curtis VanderKooi, patrol commander of the Southeast Service Area for the Grand Rapids Police Department; and Jeff Hawke, past director of the Cadillac Department of Public Safety — were selected from a group of six candidates during panel interviews held the week of Oct. 17.

“We received 36 applications, most of which were from very well-qualified candidates,” McGinnis said. “It was hard to narrow the field to 12, much less two.”

The interview panel consisted of elected and appointed officials, and representatives from Grand Haven’s professional, business and education community.

A second round of interviews with the two finalists are scheduled for Nov. 9, with a public session being held at the Grand Haven Community Center from 7–8:30 p.m. Each finalist is expected to make a brief presentation on their qualifications and will answer questions from those in attendance.
