Shipwreck expert to talk about the Lady Elgin

The 36th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald is Thursday, Nov. 10, and the public is invited to Spring Lake District Library to hear the story of another harrowing shipwreck.

The free presentation about the sinking of the steamer the Lady Elgin will begin at 7 p.m. Shipwreck hunter Valerie van Heest, a member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame, will take the audience back in time to a dark and stormy night in 1860 to share the details of this tragic tale from the annals of maritime history.

Van Heest is a founding member of the Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates, whose mission is to preserve and promote the state’s submerged maritime history.
