High winds kicked up early this afternoon, downing tree limbs and power lines. Power went out in Spring Lake Township around 1:30 p.m.

Since back-up generators were providing power only to some of the facility, Spring Lake Fitness and Aquatic Center Assistant Director J.J. Fox said they decided the facility should be closed. She said they expect to reopen Thursday at 5:15 a.m.

Spring Lake High School, Jeffers Elementary School and the Spring Lake district's alternative education building also lost power around 1:30 p.m. today. The schools finished the school day, and back-up power generators were providing enough electricity for after-school activities.

The high winds were causing power outages at other locations in Northwest Ottawa County today. The gusty winds are expected to continue until shortly after midnight Thursday.
