“Everyone in the whole state always talks about ‘Up North,’” Balk said, referencing the abundance of cherries in Northwest Michigan. “Look at what we have here.”
Balk’s downtown store provides blueberry-based products using berries that are locally grown in the Grand Haven area.
“I am here just to promote the blueberries,” Balk said.
Balk, who doesn’t have a farm herself, said she tries to buy from all of the local blueberry farmers.
Balk said she has more than 45 different products available at the store, which is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday (until 8 p.m. Fridays), and she is in the process of developing more creations.
“I am working on more products for the summer,” she said.
Items available at the downtown location include chocolate-covered blueberries, blueberry jam, dried blueberries, blueberry scone mix, blueberry oatmeal cookie mix, blueberry pancake mix, trail and snack mix. Balk said the store also specializes in various sizes of gift boxes that can be sent all around the globe, and she even has T-shirts with blueberry slogans on them.
“Everything has a little twist to it to make it special,” she said.
