ing its wartime duty, the Silversides saw 14 combat patrols in the Pacific, sinking 23 major Japanese ships. It received four presidential unit citations and 12 Battle Stars. In 1987, the Silversides arrived to her permanent homeport of Muskegon.

The Silversides is also the backdrop for “Descending From Duty,” written by Hartland Township resident  J. Ryan Fenzel. The book begins 60 years after the Silversides’ meritorious combat. In the novel, the Silversides is docked in Muskegon Channel, just as it is today as part of the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum.

Fenzel will be a guest speaker at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at the museum’s Akeley location, 200 Washington Ave. in Grand Haven.
