Spectrum Health said in a statement that its Medical Group Center for Integrative Medicine is scheduled to open Dec. 5 in Grand Rapids. The idea it to help frequent emergency department users get primary care and other outpatient help instead.

Spectrum Health said the clinic addresses such high emergency department use that was found by emergency and addiction medicine specialist R. Corey Waller in 2008. During that year, about 950 patients were identified as visiting Butterworth and Blodgett hospital emergency departments more than 10 times. The health system said those patients had more than 20,000 total visits, costing $40 million to $50 million.
