Volunteers from fire departments across Northwest Ottawa County lined street corners collecting toys and money. Legion members will separate the toys by age and the cash will be used to purchase clothing for each child.

“It’s a great opportunity, especially in these economic times,” Lt. Scott Smith of the Spring Lake Township Fire Department said on Friday night during a collection at the Admiral gas station on M-104. “People — whether it’s a $1, $5 or $20 (donation) — they’re giving what they can, and that’s really great to see.”

A collection bin is also at the Spring Lake Township Hall, 106 S. Buchanan St.

Grand Haven Department of Public Safety officers will be collecting toys today from noon to 6 p.m.; and donations may be brought anytime to the GHDPS building, 525 Washington Ave. Collection boxes are also located at all city of Grand Haven buildings and area businesses.

Ferrysburg firefighters will collect toys from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Leppink’s Food Center on 174th Avenue. Collection containers are also available at Leppink’s, Ferrysburg City Hall, North Bank Hardware and Pine Street Cafe.

Crockery Township firefighters will accept donations from 8 a.m. to noon today at the following locations: the four-way stop at the intersection of Cleveland, 112th Avenue and Apple Avenue; and at the Marathon gas station on M-104 at Interstate 96.

Robinson Township firefighters will accept donations at Spinners gas station from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.
