Winterfest photo contest open for entries Dec. 17

The Tri-Cities Historical Museum will again be hosting the Winterfest Photo Contest, but with some changes that amateur photographers need to know before submitting photos this year.
Dec 12, 2011

The 2012 Winterfest is Jan. 26-29.

Photos for the contest can be dropped off at the museum, 200 Washington Ave., beginning Dec. 17. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12.

This year, the overall size of the photo and mat (if matted) must conform to the following four standard sizes: 8-by-10, 11-by-14, 14-by-18 and 16-by-20. The actual print size can be no smaller than 8-by-10.

In addition, only black and white mat colors will be accepted.

A new category has been added, called “Altered Images.” This category will accept photographs manipulated for artistic purposes by applying digital and/or traditional special effects (i.e., colorizing, toning, collage, photo composites, HDR, cloning, blur, etc.).

Local photographers are encouraged to enter the contest. It is open to amateur photographers. An amateur photographer is anyone who does not earn more than $600 per year selling photos, thereby filing a 1099 tax form.

The contest has two divisions: adult and children (high school age and below). Each division has an entry fee. Youth entries must pay a $2 fee per photo submitted and adult entry fees are $5 per photo submitted.

An awards reception will take place at the museum’s Akeley Building from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27. Winners will be announced during the reception.

All photos will be displayed for the Winterfest weekend and will be available for pick up Feb. 7-14, 2012.
