“There was a blown lightning arrestor by the (United Methodist) Church of the Dunes,” BLP Administrative Services Manager Renee Molyneux said.

The outage lasted from 5:10-6:30 p.m. and impacted customers across Grand Haven.

Molyneux said the failed arrestor caused circuit No. 1 at the BLP’s Harbor Drive diesel plant to fail, causing the outage in the city. A lightning arrestor is used on electrical power systems to protect the insulation on the system from the damaging effects of lightning strikes.

“(The failure) is due to old age and it may have been hit by lightning over the years,” Molyneux said.

She said this could have caused cracks to form in the device — and, with the amount of rain Wednesday, the device failed.
