Alex Andrews grew the cabbage at his home in Muskegon Township as part of a school project. Alex, a fourth-grader at Orchard View’s Cardinal Elementary School, earned a $1,000 savings bond for his efforts.

The bond is being given out by the Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program, which takes place across the country. Members of Michigan’s agriculture commission randomly selected his cabbage as the state’s winner.

Cabbages can grow to more than 100 pounds.
