‘Babka and Books’ reading club begins Jan. 2

"Babka and Books' is the enticing theme for the annual Blizzard of Books reading club for adults that will begin Tuesday, Jan. 2, and continue through March 10 at Spring Lake District Library.

High school students may also participate in the reading club.

Book club participants can earn prizes just by reading the books of their choice. All books must be checked out from and returned to Spring Lake District Library or downloaded from the library’s website, www.sllib.org, to qualify for the Blizzard of Books.

Why “Babka and Books”? Babka, a type of coffee cake associated with Eastern European Jewish tradition, may whet your appetite to learn more about Jewish history and culture. While you’re in the library checking out books, stop and take a look at the “In a Nutshell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak” traveling exhibit on display there until Feb. 24. The exhibit shows how Sendak’s artistic journey led him deeper into his own family’s history and his Jewish identity.

The Village Baker in Spring Lake will be offering babka on their menu and are providing a babka as one of the grand prizes reading club participants can win.

Participants will have a variety of prizes to choose from — including tote bags, coffee mugs, video/DVD coupon books and chocolates.

Reading club participants who read five books may enter the grand prize drawings that will be held when the Blizzard of Books concludes in March. Grand prizes include the previously mentioned babka, Entertainment Coupon Books, $30 gift certificates to the Olive Garden/Red Lobster restaurants and a $30 Shell gas card.

The reading club is sponsored by the Friends of Spring Lake District Library.

For more information, call the library at 846-5770, ext. 107; or visit www.sllib.org.

The library is located at 123 E. Exchange St. in Spring Lake.
