The incident happened Monday at the Walmart store on Sherman Boulevard.

According to Jennifer Welch, the man pushed her son and cart about 4 feet before letting go. Welch said the man never touched her 4-year old son, who was sitting in the cart’s seat.

Fruitport Township police were called after the man pushed his own cart to a check-out lane, paid for his items in cash and drove away.

Welch said she reviewed store surveillance video with police and store security. She said she fears the man may try something similar at other area stores.

After grabbing the cart, Welch — who was shopping with her boyfriend — yelled, “Dude what are you doing with my son?”

The man, who was dressed in a camouflage coat and dark sunglasses, let go immediately and didn’t say anything as he walked away.
