Registration opens for ‘Jigs and Jigsaws’ to kick off 2012 Greenway celebration

"Jigs and Jigsaws' will be the kickoff event for the Grand River Greenway Parks Celebration 2012, a year-long celebration of the progress toward establishing a public greenway across Ottawa County.

The event will be held at the newly remodeled Connor Bayou log cabin, along Cedar Street on the south bank of the Grand River, from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8.

Pre-registered teams of four will race to assemble a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle. Registration forms will be available at the county parks office, Loutit and Spring Lake district libraries, and the Tri-Cities Historical Museum.

There is a limit of 10 teams. The $40 registration fee per team includes one jigsaw puzzle.

The limited-edition puzzle’s design is top secret until the day of the contest; it was custom-designed for this occasion. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team, and popcorn and soft drinks will be served to entrants.

Upon completion of the puzzle competition, the general public is invited into the Connor cabin for the foot-stomping, jig-inspiring sounds of Tiki O’Riley. This playful band jams on traditional Celtic and Appalachian music, using a variety of instruments including fiddles, bodhrans, bouzoukis and button accordions. Beverages and snacks will be available.

Outdoor events will be running simultaneously to “Jigs and Jigsaws.” Dan and Lynda Anderson from Tundra Outfitters and Kennels and their canine co-stars will be conducting a sled dog exhibition and demonstration. Mushing clothing and gear will be on display — some relating to Lynda’s father who raced in Alaska’s first Iditarod.

The Andersons will also be hitching up a half-dozen of their Siberian huskies for a demonstration of the dogs’ abilities for pulling, power and speed.

In addition, weather permitting, parks staff will have snowshoes available for people who would like to try them out on the new trails at the park.
