New music fest planned for Muskegon

A task force, created after the Muskegon Summer Celebration folded, is planning a new 10-day music event at Heritage Landing in downtown Muskegon for next summer.

The event does not yet have a name or a board of directors. Decisions on both are expected in January.

Tim Lipan is chairman of the Summer Festival Task Force created under leadership from the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. Lipan confirmed on Thursday that the event will start on June 29 and run until July 8. It will include Art in the Park, which has been held in Muskegon’s Hackley Park for decades.

The Community Foundation for Muskegon County took ownership of Summer Celebration’s equipment in November. That equipment includes fence, trailer and electrical equipment; and will be used by the new festival.

The next step is the formation of a nonprofit festival board in January.

The 13-member board is expected to contract with a for-profit entity that would be responsible for booking entertainment.

Lipan said the event will include lots of live music on multiple stages and other special events in various downtown Muskegon locations.

The new festival board is not expected to include members from the board that controlled the now-defunct Summer Celebration.
