Today is Michigan’s 175th birthday as a state

Michigan is celebrating its 175th birthday, with Gov. Rick Snyder proclaiming today as Michigan Statehood Day.

Admitted to the union in 1837 as the 26th state, Michigan and its history will be celebrated Saturday at the Michigan Historical Museum.

The Statehood Day festivities will offer costumed interpreters, craft demonstrations and musical performances. It will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum in downtown Lansing.

The governor is encouraging every resident to take a moment and reflect on the “beauty, greatness and promise” of Michigan.
