Similar to “Vagina Monologues” performed in previous years, GVSU students will use theater to tell real-life stories of women and girls who have performed courageous actions. The play is based on the book “That Takes Ovaries!: Bold Females and Their Brazen Acts, and is about 64 women and their short stories of strength and audacity.
GVSU’s production of the play will use short stories from the book and stories written by women from the West Michigan community.
Performances will take place at the Grand River Room, Kirkhof Center, on the Allendale Campus, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9; and at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at the Wealthy Theatre, 1130 Wealthy S.E. in Grand Rapids.
Tickets are $15 for community members and $10 for students. Tickets can be purchased at Wealthy Theatre, online at www.wealthytheatre.org/ovaries or by calling 616-459-4788.
The Women’s Center will use the production to raise funds for local and international women’s and girls’ rights efforts. In the past 10 years of “Vagina Monologues” performances, the Women’s Center raised more than $100,000 for organizations that support women and girls: including the Center for Women in Transition, YMCA and the international V-Day Movement.
