N.Y. artist to discuss road-kill paintings at GH gallery

Calling it a dedication to the animal lives lost on the road, New York artist Jason Eisner will give a gallery talk about his work, "On the Road: Paintings by Jason Eisner,' at Grand Haven's Fire Barn Gallery on Thursday evening.

Eisner, a painter and multimedia artist, interacts with the streets of New York City using public spaces as medium and venue. He has an ongoing exhibit of street art that he places on view for the public to enjoy. He dons special outfits and uses handmade decorative tools as part of his performance.

Eisner’s connection to Grand Haven is through his association with a group of New York City painters that have been visiting Grand Haven and collaborating with several local painters.

The relationship between the artists on the East Coast and West Michigan began in the mid-1990s when several of the artists trained under first- and second-generation abstract expressionists at Manhattan’s New York Studio School.

Friendships developed between the artists — which offered them the flexibility to travel and paint in new places by supporting each other with locations to stay, and opportunities to explore and create new work.

The New York group, called Painting in New York, has had shows with several artists from West Michigan.

Eisner will also make an appearance at the Richard App Gallery, 910 Cherry St. in Grand Rapids, at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
