Proposed SL dog park now has some teeth

Canine tails may be wagging a little harder and a little happier in Spring Lake now that a proposed dog park has some teeth. The Spring Lake Rotary Club has approved the Boy Scout Troop 14 dog park project as the beneficiary of its 2012 raffle ticket sales.

The scouts hope to secure $9,000 in community and corporate donations as a match for the $10,000 Rotary pledge.

The dog park has been a priority of the village’s Parks and Recreation Committee since it ranked fifth in desired community additions on a survey of residents in 2008.

Troop 14 Boy Scouts Alex and Danny Brower plan to start construction on the dog park, just south of Lakeside Trail and north of the Central Park ballfields, this spring — with hopes of completion prior to Memorial Day. The Brower brothers intend to earn their Eagle Scout designation by overseeing and directing installation of the $20,000 “bark park.”

Danny, 13, a Spring Lake Middle School seventh-grader, said the first phase will include a fence to enclose the 110-by-407-foot dog park. The second phase includes benches, and doggie drinking fountains and waste receptacles.

“With the Rotary donation, it really got the ball moving and it will really help out with our fundraising,” Danny said. “I’m really thankful they were considerate enough to let us present our project.”

Ticket sales for the 15th annual raffle begin March 2. The cost is $100 per ticket. The drawing for the $10,000 grand prize will take place at 7 p.m. May 18 at the Spring Lake Country Club.

“If four people get together and buy a ticket, all four can come to the party,” Johnson said. “If 10 people buy one ticket, all 10 can come.”

The May 18 event includes appetizers, drinks and live entertainment by The Trace.

Raffle tickets are available from any Spring Lake Rotary Club member or by calling 842-6378. Direct donations to the dog park may be made at Spring Lake Village Hall, 102 W. Savidge St.
