Kennedy, 55, was selected to fill a nearly four-year term that expires Nov. 16, 2015. The seat was formerly held by John Stafford, who last year ran for the open mayoral post.

Stafford and DeWitt were nominated for the other vacancy on council, a term that expires Nov. 18, 2013. After council voted 3-2 for both nominations, a second vote was taken and DeWitt, 59, was selected, City Manager Craig Bessinger said.

Stafford lost to fellow Councilman Dan Ruiter for the two-year mayoral post in November 2011. That created the second council vacancy, as Ruiter’s council term did not expire until after the 2013 election.

Bessinger said the two new council members will take the oath of office and be seated at City Council’s next meeting, March 5.

Kennedy, DeWitt and Stafford were among six Ferrysburg residents who applied for the two council seats.
