Nelson serves as chairman and associate professor in the department of art and art history at Hope College, where he has taught photography since 1989. His photographs have been exhibited widely, including solo and group exhibitions in Chicago and New York.

Hoeksema has taught at Hope College, and has exhibited at the Muskegon Museum of Art and many galleries regularly in West Michigan for the past two decades.
