Strong winds knock out power in parts of W. Mich.

Consumers Energy says strong winds are to blame for knocking out electrical service to about 25,000 of its customers.

The CMS Energy Corp. subsidiary said about 9,000 of this morning’s outages were in Kent County, about 6,900 were in Ingham County, and about 2,300 in Ottawa County as of 4 a.m. High winds were reported in those areas Wednesday night and early today.

The National Weather Service said a trained spotter reported a wind gust of 62 mph in Ottawa County’s Jamestown Township at 2:43 this morning. A gust of 59 mph was reported in Grand Rapids at 2:39 a.m. today, and gusts of 49 mph were reported in Allendale at 2:17 a.m. today and in Muskegon at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.
