Residents will have an opportunity to follow in her footsteps.

Shelby, 12, died Feb. 26 and her parents are planning to take their daughter’s last Locks of Love donation to the organization’s headquarters in Florida.

“She had bright red hair, and she wanted to help other girls,” Kristen Hardebeck, Shelby’s mother, said. “She said there should be more redheads in this world.”

Kristen and her daughter donated to Locks of Love together. Kristen said she has donated her hair twice, but Shelby donated more often because her hair grew faster.

“She’s donated her hair five times since the age of 5,” Hardebeck said.

Reds Salon & Day Spa stylist Kristie Boltze attended Shelby’s memorial service and thought at that time how wonderful it would be to organize a Lock-a-thon in honor of Shelby. The Saturday event is timed so that the hair donated may be added to Shelby’s latest donation and be delivered all together.

“It popped into my head right there,” Boltze said about her idea to have a Lock-a-thon. “I couldn’t stop thinking about it.”

After talking with Shelby’s mom, dates were set.

“I was really touched and it meant a lot,” Hardebeck said of Boltze’s idea.

Boltze said she will be cutting the hair of anyone willing to give 10 or more inches to Locks of Love.

“It’s something I do, so why not donate my time and use the skills I’ve learned through the years?” she said.

People with permed or colored hair may participate, but those who have bleached highlights or gray hair aren’t able to donate because of Locks of Love guidelines.

Later this month the Hardebecks will drive to Florida to hand deliver Shelby’s donation and all of the other hair collected.

“This is for her, and it will help our boys,” Hardebeck said of the trip and the family’s grief. “Shelby’s just irreplaceable and we just miss her.”
